Gentilly, New Orleans: A Diverse, Beautiful Community with Much to Offer
Gentilly is a community located in the heart of New Orleans, minutes from Lake Pontchartrain. As a middle-class neighborhood, this community is home to numerous home styles, a variety of property types, and plenty of amenities. With some higher ground, Gentilly has some protection from wet weather, but, like much of the city, it was significantly damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Today, much of the area is rebuilt with some areas of new development and an outstanding location.
One of the best reasons to live in Gentilly is because it is close to everything, but far enough away to provide privacy and less tourism than other areas of New Orleans. The lake sits to the north of the city. Along the south is Interstate 610, providing direct access for those who plan to commute throughout the area for work or school. This community stretches from Esplanade Avenue to the Industrial Canal, creating a long piece of land.

Gentilly is home to Dillard University. It’s home to many neighborhoods with young children and families. You’ll also find this area is ideal for those looking for a place to retire. The homes themselves have a significant amount of character. Some date to the late 19th century while others are mid-20th century ranches. Larger bungalows and even a few newer developments or homes are scattered throughout this area as well.
The neighborhood was originally a shallow swamp area. A man-made ridge was built up over time to create a bit of protection for the community. Some definitions of the community expand it further, up into the Upper 9th Ward.
Living in Gentilly
With a wide range of home styles and property options, those wishing to live in Gentilly will have their option of homes to select from. There are three universities present in this area including the University of New Orleans, Dillard University (a landmark for the community) and Southern University at New Orleans.
The city is home to the Norman Mayer Branch of the public library system. The community has easy access to the surrounding area of New Orleans. The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority offers easy transit service throughout the region.
Gentilly is home to several smaller neighborhoods. Some of the largest are the Lake Terrace and Gentilly Woods area. Other neighborhoods include Filmore, Dillard, and Oak Park. Many of these are tree-lined communities with a family-centric atmosphere.
Things to Do in Gentilly
Whether you are visiting Gentilly for the first time or finding a home in the heart of this city, there’s much to enjoy about this area. One of the most famous events The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival held on the last weekend of April and first weekend of May is held in Gentilly at the at the Fair Grounds Race Course right on Gentilly Blvd. The Krewe of Dreux Mardi Gras parade and party is held in this area. The New Orleans Greek Festival happens here in May. Locations to visit include Lake Pontchartrain, the Hellenic Cultural Center, and the UNO Arena.
