Anyone that has visited New Orleans knows this community, in general, is very eclectic and interesting. One never really knows what is around the corner. One of the best neighborhoods in the area is Marigny, often just called The Marigny. This community in New Orleans is a fantastic place to call home for its vibrancy, culture, and proximity to the area’s best amenities.

Get to Know the Community of Marigny

Marigny is located near North Rampart Street. The Mississippi River runs to the south of the community. It is a smaller area with less than a half of a square mile in overall area and is home to about 2100 people. Yet, it is fantastic in a number of ways. Its heritage is strongly Creole as it was designed by a Creole real estate developer in the 19th century. Today, much of that influence is present in the architecture.

What you will find interesting about Marigny is that it is a colorful, beautiful community. It has several architectural influences here including stunning Spanish and French elements, Colonial buildings, and even a bit of Caribbean color and charm. The architecture paints a fantastic picture of this community’s makeup as well. It is very much a blend of cultures that just is not the same anywhere else in New Orleans or the region.

Of course, like much of the city, Marigny comes to life when the spring months hit. It has its own homegrown Mardi Gras celebration. This one is one of the favorites for locals. It is where fewer tourists are and more of the authentic experience happens. However, Marigny is close in proximity to downtown with just a short streetcar ride on the new Rampart/St. Claude line.

Living in Marigny

Finding the perfect place to live in Marigny can be hard. That is not because the area has few homes for sale, but more because each street has its own unique charm. Located just downriver from the French Quarter, homes here are a bit more pricy but their location and overall size and features make up for it. It’s home to trendy restaurants a beautiful, tree-lined area you can walk through, and, of course, lots of antique stores and museum-quality art galleries. You’ll hear jazz just about every night on your evening stroll and be able to taste the latest cuisine from French and Creole-inspired chefs.

When it comes to the people that live here, expect a welcoming experience. Many of those that call this area home are very proud of their community. Marigny has well-landscaped yards and stunning restoration work of the homes. Step into the town square area to get to know people or just spend some time walking along the various streets.
